The Holy Cross Church

The Sisak Diocese acquired a parcel of land next to the remains of previous Catholic Churches that have stood on the same historical site for centuries.

In 2019, the build was completed, and the newly constructed Church was blessed. For the first time in 76 years the people of Zrin had a Parish Church in which to worship. The Zrin parish is unique. In 1943 the previous Church was burnt along with every other building and home in Zrin. The Catholic inhabitants were banished and for 75 years no Catholic resided in the Parish. The Catholic Authorities decided not to close the parish despite 0 parishioners.

Until victory in the Homeland War Zrinjans were forbidden from returning to Zrin however in 1996 and every year since Zrinjans have returned to pray and remember. Previously they stood on this site in the open air, now the raised walls of the newly built church give the community a proper place to pay homage.
On 3rd May 2023 Bishop Petanjak finished his homily with the following words:

“I observe this place Zrin and its inhabitants who could have fled during the war, at least most of them could have saved their lives, they could have turned like sunflowers and changed their minds, but they didn't. They stood their ground, believing, maybe it seems naive now, that they would stay there, because it was theirs and because they didn't touch others and because they didn't steal other peoples but only defended their own. They chose to stay. They all stayed on the same side and died honourably. For them, living meant dying. To die for what you love and to seal your love with your own blood. This means consciously choosing the cross as life and life as the cross. This is their legacy to us and this is their eternal memory and it will last forever”.

In the crypt below the new Church floor are the carefully and respectfully collected bones found during the 2013 archaeological excavation of the old foundations, now blessed, and laid to rest by Bishop Vlado Košić.
Adorning the church's front wall are two memorial plaques inscribed with the names of the 291 Zrinjans who lost their lives during and shortly after World War II.

The bell in the newly constructed bell tower rings daily at 6.00am, 12 noon and 7.00pm. Originally the bell kept time for the village, to wake, eat and to stop work or pray. The bell, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary weights 120kilograms was was cast in the ARM foundry in Bubnjarci. The bell was a gift from a friend of Zrin who wanted to remain anonymous.
The Altar, also a donation, was crafted by the artist Ivan Kujundžić who made the stone altar, ambon, sacristy and pews.

Mr Ivan Jukic from Drenje made the cross that decorates the top of the bell tower.
