How to Contribute to the Zrin Family Tree Project
Start with a name
The Zrin Family Tree Project helps rebuild the human story of Zrin, one family at a time.
A surname can be the first clue. Names such as Dembić, Ikić, Petanjak, Babić, or Likić may connect someone to a house, a photograph, a church record, a family story or another descendant searching for the same roots.
You do not need a complete family tree to get in touch. A few names, a photo, a document or a remembered story can be enough to help.
What to send
Start with what your family already knows. Useful details include surnames, maiden names, nicknames, birth and married names, approximate dates, migration stories, old photographs, letters, certificates and memories passed down by older relatives.
It is fine if some details are uncertain. Just say whether something is confirmed, remembered, guessed or possible.
Record names carefully
Croatian surnames can appear in different forms, especially after migration. Accents such as ć, č, š, or ž may have been removed, and names may have been written differently in Australia, Canada, Germany, America or elsewhere.
For example, Dembić may appear as Dembic, Ikić as Ikic, and Petanjak as Petanyak. A different spelling does not always mean a different family.
Maiden names are especially important. They can connect family branches that might otherwise be missed, so please include them wherever you can.
Share old photographs
Old photographs are one of the most useful things you can contribute.
Even if you only know one person in a photo, another descendant may recognise a face, surname, house, road, church gathering or family group. A partly identified photograph is still worth sharing.
If possible, include who is in the image, who is unknown, where it may have been taken, the approximate year or decade, who owned the photo and whether the names are confirmed or guessed.
Share documents and records
Family documents can help confirm names, places and relationships. These may include baptism records, marriage records, death notices, prayer cards, immigration papers, letters, passports, birth certificates, land records or family notes.
Croatian church records can also be useful because they may include parents’ names, godparents, witnesses, maiden names and parish connections. Helpful starting points include FamilySearch Croatia church records and the Croatian State Archives genealogy resources.
Label things clearly
Clear labelling makes everything easier. Use helpful file names such as:

If you are not sure who is in a photo, say so. A short note is often enough: “This photo came from my grandmother’s album. We think the woman on the left may be from the Ikić family, but we are not certain.”
