Zrin Feast of Our St. Mary The Cross 2025

Updated: Oct 26

On a solemn Saturday, May 3, 2025, the historic Croatian village of Zrin once again became a beacon of faith, remembrance, and unyielding hope. The Feast of Našašća sv. Križa was celebrated with deep reverence in the memorial church, drawing Zrinjan descendants, pilgrims from across Croatia, and various dignitaries. Presiding over the poignant mass was Bishop Vlado Košić of Sisak, accompanied by Bishop's Vicar Marko Cvitkušić, home pastor Darija Stanković, and pastor Josip Jerković.

This annual gathering in Zrin is more than just a religious observance; it's a powerful testament to a community's enduring spirit in the face of immense suffering, and a fervent prayer for justice and resurrection.

Zrin Feast of Our St. Mary The Cross 2025: A Symbol of Suffering and Resilient Hope

Bishop Košić's homily resonated deeply with all present, casting Zrin not merely as a place on a map but as a profound "symbol of suffering, but also of resurrection of the Croatian people." On the Zrin Feast of Our St. Mary The Cross 2025, he spoke within the very walls of the memorial church, a monument to the martyrdom of Zrinjan, emphasizing that the parish's dedication to Our St. Mary The Cross is no coincidence. It is here, he explained, that the people of Zrin "lived their cross and their calvary."

The bishop vividly recalled the "bloody September of 1943," a dark chapter when partisan units brutally killed 291 innocent citizens, expelled families, and cruelly forbade their return. This tragic event remains etched into the collective memory, a stark reminder of profound injustice.

From Ashes to Revival: Zrin's Phoenix-Like Resurrection

Despite the unimaginable devastation, Bishop Košić declared with conviction, "Zrin is not dead." For three decades, believers have faithfully gathered to commemorate the tragedy, and crucially, over the past ten years, a vibrant renewal of parish life has taken root. "Like the Phoenix that rises to life, so does this parish rise again," the bishop proclaimed, underscoring a core Christian belief: "after death and suffering comes the resurrection." This unwavering hope fuels the community's vision for Zrin's complete restoration.

The Ongoing Fight for Justice: Annulment and Ancestral Land

A significant development revealed during the celebration was Bishop Košić's recent visit, alongside Bishop Ivica Petanjka, to the Minister of Justice. The purpose? To advocate for the annulment of a 1946 verdict that unjustly branded Zrinjani as "enemies of the people" and stripped them of their property.

The bishop passionately articulated the plea on behalf of Zrin's descendants, whose ancestral lands have never been returned. "Our people still have not returned their ancestors. They have no place to stand and say - this is my home, it is where my ancestors lived," he lamented. He stressed that overturning this unjust verdict would be a "key step towards justice" and essential for the true spiritual and physical resurrection of Zrin.

Confronting Ideology: A Call for Consistency and Truth

Bishop Košić did not shy away from confronting contemporary issues. He openly criticized the "inconsistency of modern Croatian reality," particularly concerning historical questions. He highlighted a troubling event at the highest level where a participant justified the killing of innocent priests, labeling such tolerance as "lenient and unacceptable." The bishop concluded with a stark warning: Croatia remains "under the strong influence of ideology," an obstacle to a genuine confrontation with its past and to securing justice for its victims.

The Cross: A Sign of Salvation and Hope in Zrin

Concluding his powerful sermon, Bishop Košić delivered a message steeped in hope, drawing inspiration from Pope Francis's declaration of this jubilee year as the Year of Hope. He reminded everyone that the cross, though a symbol of pain and death, is ultimately a "door to resurrection, new life and the victory of good over evil." What was once an instrument of torture has, for Christians, become the ultimate sign of salvation.
